Description

Part of a bowl with half of the wall missing, belonging to Ottoman ceramics of the Miletus ware style. It has a hemispherical body and a smoothly outward-curved rounded edge. It belongs to group 1 of Crimean wares of this style, type 2.1. The inside, covered with white slip, is brightly painted: directly below the rim runs a narrow horizontal band bounded by double lines, the upper ones in dark-blue pigment (cobalt) on a turquoise-blue ground (copper), filled with a meander pattern in black pigment (chrome). The walls are divided by thin black vertical lines into radial segments; at the top each line is flanked by two dark-blue dots. In the centre of each segment is a dark-blue pyramidal spiral motif made of horizontal lines, flanked below by two olive strokes. The central part of the bottom is separated from the walls by three concentric dark-blue lines and filled with dense floral ornament of smoothly curved stems and almond-shaped leaves in olive-green pigment on a dark-blue ground (an ivy stem?). Unfortunately, because the coating is damaged, the central image of the medallion cannot be read. The outside, in the upper part of the vessel, is covered with green glaze with turquoise-blue and dark-blue spots. The typology of I. B. Teslenko is used. Dated to the mid-15th to mid-16th century. Scientific description by Yaroslav Chentsov.
