Description

A fragment of a stamped jug from the group of closed-form ceramics of south-eastern Crimea, covered with red-brown slip. The vessel probably had a spherical body. The upper part of the neck is lost; a ceramic strainer with through holes is built into the surviving part at the base of the neck. The remains of a side handle can be traced. The outer surface of the body is entirely covered with elaborate relief ornament in a predominantly floral-geometric style. In the upper band the lines form a system of almond-shaped figures whose inner ground is densely filled with small raised dots. The lower band, separated by a concentric line, carries a row of stylised triangles alternately inverted, each containing a star, with the spaces between them filled by smaller triangles with dots in their fields. Dated to the 14th century. Scientific description by Yaroslav Chentsov.
