Glazed bowl

Description

A bowl from the group of glazed open-form ceramics of south-eastern Crimea. It has a hemispherical body with a rounded edge, no shoulder, and a tall ring foot. Form type 9.4.B. Decorated with engraving in the sgraffito technique with a single fine cutter and polychrome painting, corresponding to division III.1 and section III.D, which defines wares with internal polychrome sgraffito decoration tinted with yellow and green mineral paints. The central medallion of the inner surface is filled with an elaborate interlaced geometric pattern, the so-called Seljuk chain. The walls are decorated with radial incised lines dividing the surface into sectors, forming a motif resembling sun rays or petals. The sectors are alternately filled with green and yellow-brown glaze; on the latter, wavy incised lines stand out. The colour often runs beyond the incised outlines. The upper half of the outside is covered with monochrome green glaze. The typology of I. B. Teslenko is used. Dated to the late 14th to mid-15th century. Scientific description by Yaroslav Chentsov.
