Glazed bowl

Description

A bowl from the group of glazed open-form ceramics of south-eastern Crimea. It has a straight, vertical concave shoulder separated from the body by a rib; the rim is not pronounced. Form type 9.1.A. Decorated with engraving in the sgraffito technique under a monochrome glaze, done with wide and fine cutters, corresponding to division II.2. The outside of the bowl, apart from a thin line of glaze along the edge, is undecorated. The centre of the inner surface shows a stylised walking bird (probably a chukar) and three triangles with concave corners and spirals in the free spaces. The head is turned to the left; the bird's body is rendered by dense parallel hatching. Covered with yellow glaze with traces of undissolved pigment. The typology of I. B. Teslenko is used. Dated to the second half of the 14th to early 15th century. Published by E. R. von Stern (Stern 1906, pl. VIII: 79). Scientific description by Yaroslav Chentsov.
