На фоні нічного пейзажу в центрі композиції – фігура солдата, що йде по полю. У лівій руці тримає мішок з речами, а правою за руку тримає маленьку дівчинку у короткій сукні, на її плечі накинутий великий чорний піджак. Обличчя дівчинки у чорній сажі. Праворуч - босий хлопчик дев’яти років з сивим волоссям. Одягнутий у короткі сірі штани, сорочку. В глибині композиції праворуч – телеграфний стовп.
