Description

A light-clay jug with a tall neck, a slightly outward-turned rim with a rounded edge and an ovoid body. It has one handle and a flat bottom. Wheel-thrown. It was found by chance and handed to the Kerch Museum in 1899, and from there to the Odesa Archaeological Museum. There are close parallels in burial no. 155 of the Suuk-Su cemetery, which belonged to the Germanic-Alanic population of south-western Crimea. In 1899–1900 part of the Suuk-Su cemetery was destroyed during road building, and the finds from it were looted and sold off; some of the artefacts were bought back by O. L. Bertier-Delagarde, the organiser of the site's excavations, and sent to Odesa. This jug may have had the same fate. The jug from burial no. 155 is dated in the literature to the 6th–7th century AD, so it is reasonable to date this piece to the same time. Scientific description by Yaroslav Chentsov.
