Description

A fragmentary base of a glazed dish from the circle of Iznik ceramics in blue and white. Decorated with underglaze painting. The central field of the inner side is bounded by thin concentric dark-green lines. The inner space is decorated with a floral pattern: stylised clouds or lush flower buds and thinner stems with three small leaves can be clearly traced. The motifs are executed in cobalt blue applied in two intensities (thick lines for outlines and details, diluted for fills and background) on a light ground. The outer side, starting from the low ring foot, is also decorated with concentric dark-green circles, one of which additionally carries an intermittent row of dots of the same colour. In the highest surviving zone there is also a pattern of trefoils similar to those on the inside. The ring foot and the cobalt-blue painting match the characteristic features of Iznik ceramics. 16th century. Attributed with the help of Prof. S. O.
