Description

A large bowl from the group of glazed open-form ceramics of south-eastern Crimea. It has a rounded shoulder and an outward-turned rim, is shallow, and stands on a ring foot of medium height. Type 9.2.A. Decorated with engraving in the sgraffito and champlevé techniques under polychrome painting, corresponding to division III.2 and section III.D, which defines wares with internal polychrome sgraffito decoration tinted with yellow and green mineral paints. In the centre of the inner composition is a medallion bounded by a double incised circle, containing an elaborate geometric-floral composition in the form of a krin (the term for a stylised lily) with a hatched flower bud. The free space inside the circle is filled with whirling spiral rosettes. From the central medallion to the rim run simple radial lines, each ending in a small loop or circle, so that the composition looks like a calyx. The outside is undecorated. The typology of I. B. Teslenko is used. Dated to the late 14th to early 15th century. Scientific description by Yaroslav Chentsov.
