MI LOR ADIKZ "Tustan"

The State Historical and Cultural Preserve "Tustan" is a unique monument of medieval Ukrainian history and culture near the village of Urych in the Lviv region. It was created in 1994 to preserve the rock-cut fortress town of Tustan, which stood on the Urych cliffs from the 9th to the 16th century. In the Middle Ages Tustan was an important defensive, customs and administrative centre on a Carpathian trade route. Although the wooden structures have not survived, more than four thousand grooves and cuts remain in the rock, allowing researchers to reconstruct with high accuracy the appearance of this unique fortress, which has no parallel anywhere in the world. Today the preserve combines research, museum, educational and cultural work. The Tustan Museum presents archaeological finds, reconstructions of medieval weapons and interactive displays, and the preserve makes active use of modern technology, including 3D modelling and augmented reality to recreate the fortress. An important part of its work is the annual medieval culture festival "Tu Stan!", which brings together re-enactors, artists and tourists from all over Ukraine. The preserve also works to protect the natural and cultural landscape of Urych, supports the local community and promotes traditional Boiko culture, turning Tustan into a modern centre of living history and cultural heritage.
