What is the museum fund and why protect it?

Imagine a treasure collected by generations, not of gold but spiritual, historical and cultural. It is not locked away or hidden in the mountains but kept in museums, accessible to everyone yet in need of special care. This is the Museum Fund of Ukraine.

What is the museum fund?

The Museum Fund of Ukraine is the totality of all objects of historical, cultural, scientific or artistic value kept in Ukrainian museums.
It is not just paintings and icons. It includes:

  • archaeological finds,
  • early printed books and manuscripts,
  • folk dress, weapons, musical instruments,
  • photographs, letters, posters,
  • belongings of famous Ukrainians,
  • and even household objects, when they become “witnesses” of an era.

Every such object is a source of knowledge, a “carrier of memory” and part of Ukraine's great cultural mosaic.

Why protect the museum fund?

1. It is our memory and heritage

If an exhibit is lost, a piece of history is lost. And sometimes the only record of an event, a person or a whole era.

2. It is a strategic resource

In the world, cultural heritage is an element of soft power. Displays, exhibitions and cultural exchanges all shape the country's image.

3. It is vulnerable in wartime

The Russian invasion has put dozens of museums at risk. Some collections have been damaged, stolen or lost. That is why the protection and evacuation of cultural property have become critically important.

4. It is our duty to future generations

We are not the owners of this heritage; we are its temporary keepers. By preserving it today, we give our children and grandchildren the chance to learn, explore and be inspired.

What can we do?

  • Spread knowledge about the importance of the museum fund.
  • Visit museums, supporting them morally and financially.
  • Respect the work of museum staff.
  • If you have old family items, don't throw them away: hand them over to a museum or consult specialists.
  • Help museums during the war through charity, volunteering and online support.

The museum fund is the face of our history.
It does not shout. It speaks through the silence of time, manuscripts and things.
And our task is to make sure it can be heard for hundreds of years to come.
