Numismatic treasures of Ukraine

Coins are not just a means of exchange. They mirror the history, culture and art of their time. Ukraine's numismatic treasures open pages of the past to us, allowing us to trace the development of our country's statehood, economy and international ties.

From ancient coins to modern hryvnias

Numerous numismatic artefacts have been found on the territory of Ukraine, from ancient Greek coins of Olbia and Panticapaeum to Roman denarii and Scythian imitations. They attest to the active trade ties of the ancient peoples who lived on our lands. Medieval coins of the princely era, the srebreniks and zlatniks of Volodymyr the Great and Yaroslav the Wise, show the formation of Kyivan Rus' own monetary system.

A new stage in the development of numismatics began in the time of the Cossack state, when Polish, Muscovite, Turkish and European coins circulated simultaneously, reflecting the complex political situation of the time.

Coins as a reflection of art and identity

Besides their economic significance, coins have high artistic value. Their designs are miniature works of art on which coats of arms, portraits of rulers and symbols of cities and states were struck. Modern Ukraine continues this tradition: commemorative and jubilee coins of the National Bank of Ukraine are distinguished by refined design and are dedicated to historical events, outstanding figures and cultural phenomena.

Where to see numismatic collections

Numismatic collections are kept in the country's leading museums: the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, the Lviv Historical Museum, the Odesa Archaeological Museum, as well as many regional museums.

Importantly, the numismatic collections of various Ukrainian museums can now be seen online. The Register of the Museum Fund of Ukraine portal brings together exhibits from all over the country, giving the general public the opportunity to see rare numismatic artefacts without leaving home. The coin as a witness of history: every coin is not just a piece of metal. It is historical evidence that has passed through the hands of generations. By exploring numismatic collections, we learn the history of Ukraine, from antiquity to the present, in the gleam of silver, bronze and gold that preserve the breath of past eras.
